Duolingo forecasts annual revenue above estimates on strong adoption of AI

Duolingo, the popular language-learning platform, has projected its annual revenue for 2025 to be between $962.5 million and $978.5 million, surpassing Wall Street’s expectations of $965.9 million.

This optimistic forecast is largely attributed to the strong adoption of its AI-powered subscription features.

Operating on a “freemium” model, Duolingo offers two subscription tiers:

  • Super: Designed for avid users seeking an enhanced learning experience.
  • Max: Includes a generative AI-driven feature that simulates natural conversations through video calls, providing users with interactive and immersive language practice.

The introduction of the Max subscription tier, with its AI capabilities, has played a significant role in attracting more subscribers and boosting revenue. However, the implementation of these advanced features has also led to increased operational costs, impacting the company’s gross margin by approximately 100 basis points.

For the first quarter of 2025, Duolingo anticipates revenue between $220.5 million and $223.5 million, slightly above analysts’ average expectation of $221.1 million.

Despite these positive projections, the company’s stock experienced a significant drop after reporting fourth-quarter earnings that fell short of expectations. The earnings miss was primarily due to increased investments in AI and marketing, which affected profit margins.

In summary, Duolingo’s integration of AI features has driven user engagement and revenue growth, leading to an optimistic revenue forecast for 2025. However, the associated costs of these innovations have impacted profit margins, presenting both opportunities and challenges for the company’s financial performance.
