Bollywood music labels seek to challenge OpenAI in India copyright lawsuit

Several leading Bollywood music labels, including T-Series, Saregama, and Sony Music, are seeking to join a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI in New Delhi. These labels, represented by the Indian Music Industry (IMI) group, allege that OpenAI has used their sound recordings without authorization to train its AI models, thereby infringing on their copyrights.

The lawsuit was initially filed by Indian news agency ANI, accusing OpenAI’s ChatGPT of utilizing its content without permission. Since then, other media groups, some associated with prominent figures like Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, have joined the legal action. OpenAI contends that it adheres to fair-use principles, utilizing publicly available data to develop its AI models, and has challenged the jurisdiction of Indian courts over this matter.

The next hearing is scheduled in 2025, and the outcome could significantly impact how AI models handle copyrighted content in India.
