Waabi, Volvo Team to Develop Self-Driving Trucks

Waabi, an autonomous driving technology company, announced a strategic partnership with Volvo Autonomous Solutions to jointly develop and deploy self-driving trucks. This collaboration aims to integrate Waabi’s advanced AI-driven virtual driver system, known as the Waabi Driver, into Volvo’s VNL Autonomous trucks. These trucks are purpose-built for autonomous operations and will be manufactured at Volvo’s New River Valley assembly plant in Virginia.

The partnership seeks to address challenges in the freight industry, such as driver shortages and the need for increased operational efficiency. By combining Waabi’s generative AI technology with Volvo’s expertise in vehicle manufacturing and safety, the collaboration aims to produce autonomous trucks capable of safely navigating diverse scenarios and geographies.

This initiative builds upon the existing relationship between Waabi and Volvo, with Volvo Group Venture Capital having invested in Waabi’s $200 million Series B funding round in 2024. The companies plan to commence testing of the integrated autonomous trucks within the year, marking a significant step toward large-scale commercialization of self-driving freight solutions.
