Amid an ongoing attempt to slash the amount of money being spent by the United States government, it’s been discovered that the State Department’s procurement forecast for this year includes a lime item for “Armored Teslas” with a cost of $400 million.
Notably, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is heading up the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which is looking into ways to eliminate unnecessary spending.
The purchase was approved by the Biden Administration, so there’s no suggestion that this is Musk’s doing. However, there will be plenty of attention on DOGE to see whether this particular line item comes under the scrutiny you might expect.
According to an Electrek report. the target delivery of the Tesla vehicles is the fourth quarter of 2025 with deliveries then carrying on through the next five years.
While the item does not specifically mention it, we have to imagine that the vehicle in question will be a Cybertruck — especially given Tesla’s precious claims that the EV pickup is both armored and bulletproof. However, we would expect that any government contract would require additional work to make the Cybertrucks more capable of withstanding attack than they currently are.
Whether or not DOGE will nix this Tesla purchase or not remains to be seen, but we have to imagine that Musk will not be involved in such a decision for obvious reasons.
