Microsoft is has officially announced that it’s shutting down Skype on May 5, 2025. Instead of Skype, they’re pushing everyone toward Microsoft Teams.
The move isn’t surprising, considering Teams has been growing fast, especially beyond just work-related use.
Microsoft says it wants to streamline its communication tools and make things easier for users. Teams already has hundreds of millions of users, and meeting minutes have quadrupled in the past two years. With features like one-on-one calls, group chats, file sharing, and calendar tools, it’s set to replace Skype entirely.
If you’re a Skype user, you’ve got two choices:
- Move to Teams – The easiest option. You can log into Teams using your Skype account, and your chats, contacts, and history will transfer over. Skype and Teams users can still talk to each other during the transition.
- Export Your Data – Not a fan of Teams? Microsoft lets you download your chat history, contacts, and call logs before Skype shuts down.
Microsoft is also phasing out Skype’s paid services. If you have Skype Credit or a call subscription, you can keep using them until your next renewal. After that, paid calling will only work through Teams or Skype’s web portal.
Switching is easy. Just download Teams, sign in with your Skype account, and you’re all set. Microsoft even has a guide to help. However, Skype is still around until May, so no rush.
