LG Electronics Acquires Dutch Smart Home Company Athom

In July, LG Electronics acquired an 80% stake in Athom, a Dutch company renowned for its smart home platform, Homey. This strategic move aims to enhance LG’s AI-driven smart home ecosystem by integrating Athom’s extensive device connectivity with LG’s ThinQ platform. The acquisition agreement includes plans for LG to acquire the remaining 20% of Athom within the next three years.

Athom’s flagship product, Homey Pro, supports connections to over 50,000 devices across various protocols, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Matter, and Thread. This versatility aligns with LG’s vision to create AI homes that offer personalized environments by understanding user preferences and managing appliances and IoT devices accordingly.

Following the acquisition, Athom will continue to operate independently, maintaining its brand and business operations. This approach is designed to maximize Athom’s growth potential while fostering synergies in business development, research, and platform utilization between the two companies.

This acquisition reflects LG’s commitment to transitioning from a hardware-centric company to a software-based platform business, aiming to provide customers with diverse and multidimensional smart home experiences.
