Former OpenAI tech chief Murati’s AI startup comes to light with 20 hires from ChatGPT maker

Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has launched a new artificial intelligence startup named Thinking Machines Lab, based in San Francisco. The company aims to make AI systems more accessible, understandable, and customizable.

To build a strong foundation, Murati has recruited approximately 30 top researchers and engineers, with about two-thirds coming from OpenAI. Notable hires include OpenAI co-founder John Schulman as Chief Scientist and Barret Zoph as Chief Technology Officer.

The team also features experts from Google, Meta, Mistral, and Character AI. Thinking Machines Lab plans to focus on developing AI models tailored for science and programming applications and intends to share its research and code publicly to foster collaboration and transparency in the AI community.
