Apple has introduced its first in-house cellular modem, the C1, debuting in the newly announced iPhone 16e. This development marks a significant shift from Apple’s previous reliance on Qualcomm for modem chips. The C1 modem is designed to enhance power efficiency, contributing to the iPhone 16e’s extended battery life, which offers up to 26 hours of video playback.
While the C1 supports sub-6GHz 5G networks, it does not include mmWave 5G capabilities, which provide higher data speeds in specific urban areas. This strategic move allows Apple to test its in-house modem technology in the iPhone 16e before potentially integrating it into future flagship models.
The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, is available for pre-order starting February 21, with shipments beginning on February 28.
